MAIL ADOPTEE TUTORIAL
i have been asked numerous times to offer a code for mail adoptees to use in their e-mail signatures and for help adding tsu-chans to web pages. since many people don't know basic html, i decided to offer a quick tutorial on adding a signature in two of the most popular free e-mail providers on the web, as well as one for putting tsu-chan codes on html pages (see here for that tutorial).
i don't know for sure how to add signatures in any other e-mail client as i don't use them myself, but if you read through these two tutorials, it should give you a pretty good idea how to add it to yours.
* before installing your code for your e-mail signature: *
make sure you have your desired tsu-chan(s) uploaded to a free server. IMPORTANT: make sure it is one like brinkster - it's free, there are no ads should you decide to open a site in the future, they give you lots of space compared to most free servers, and they don't have scripts preventing you from linking images hosted with them from other places.
if you choose a free host like angelfire, the images will be different due to their bandwidth protection features. all you will see is an image saying "image hosted by angelfire". i'm not sure what yahoo! mail will do with images hosted on your yahoo! geocities account - you can try if you want, but if the images still don't show up, try brinkster. NOTE: please do not directly-link the files from tsubasa as my bandwidth is very high already from the other large sites on my server! sites that are found to continuously direct-link kazeninaru.net hosted materials and do not respond to warnings will be turned in to their web hosts!
TSU-CHAN IMAGE HTML CODE:
<CENTER><A HREF="http://www.kazeninaru.net/tsubasa" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="_IMAGE_.GIF" alt="Adopted from Tsubasa : Things With Wings" border=0 align="absMiddle"></A></CENTER>
for YAHOO! MAIL users:
click the down arrow next to the tab marked "mail" and choose "options". find the link for signature. you will be shown a window much like the compose e-mail window. on the top of this window, you will see choices for "editor: plain | color and graphics". make sure you are set to the "color and graphics" mode for easiest editing, especially if you don't know html well. right next to the drop-downs for paragraph, font, and size, there is a checkbox for "view html source". click it. your window should now look something like this:
now simply copy and paste the tsu-chan image html code above, paste it in the box, and change _IMAGE_.GIF to the url of your uploaded tsu-chan image. (having trouble figuring out what the url of your uploaded image is? click here for help.) if you have more than one, you can copy and paste the code multiple times, but be aware that yahoo! only lets you have seven lines of code for a signature, and having more than two tsu-chans for a signature will probably put you over, depending on how long your url is. you can add more lines once you are out of the html source view - then it interprets your images as one line. you must remember to change _IMAGE_.GIF in all codes you paste or your images will be broken when you view your signature! your window should now look something like this:
if you want to add anything of your own above or below the tsubasa items, feel free - you can put your name, smileys, a favorite quote, etc., but remember to add anything extra outside the html view (uncheck the view html source box when you have finished editing your tsu-chan source code), using yahoo!'s text toolbar given. finally, make sure the box at the very bottom of the window, marked "add signature to all outgoing messages" is checked (see image sample below). now hit the "save" button and yahoo! will automatically add that signature to every single e-mail you send out.
for HOTMAIL users:
click the tab marked "options". under the "additional options" column, click the link for "signature". make sure the checkbox next to "show the rich text toolbar" is checked for easiest editing, especially if you don't know much html. your window should look something like this:
the easiest and least frustrating way i have found to paste a new image signature into hotmail is to copy and paste the code into notepad (PC) or simpletext (MAC), make any necessary adjustments there, and save it as an html page on your desktop. to do this for a tsu-chan, open up your text editor, copy and paste the provided tsu-chan image html code, and change _IMAGE_.GIF to the url of your uploaded tsu-chan. (having trouble figuring out what the url of your uploaded image is? click here for help.) when saving, simply name it "tsubasa.html" instead of "tsubasa.txt" or just writing "tsubasa" in the name slot (see image below for example). if you forget to rename it to an html document extension when saving, just find the file on your desktop, right-click, choose rename, and erase the .txt extension, replacing it with .html.
now double-click your html page you just saved to open it in a browser window. highlight the image on the new page with your mouse, copy it, and paste it directly into hotmail's signature editor window. it should paste exactly the same as it was in your html page - as an image, not as code. (if you get code when you hit paste, remember not to highlight it in the source code of the page or in notepad, but highlight it on the open html page in internet explorer or netscape.) if you want to add anything of your own above or below the tsubasa items, feel free - you can put your name, smileys, a favorite quote, etc. (see below for sample image.) i'm not sure if hotmail has a limit to how many lines your signature can be. hit "ok" to save. if at a later date you no longer want a signature to show up, simply go in, erase the lines you saved, and hit "ok" and it will be removed from your e-mails.
